High production quality – what do you need to know?

2024-07-09

Production quality is one of the most important factors influencing customer satisfaction with the services offered by a manufacturing company. It is crucial both for the company’s reputation and market position, as well as for cost optimization. For this reason, it should be a priority for the company. We explain what production quality actually is and suggest what steps to take to ensure it.

What is production quality?

Production quality can be defined as the conformity of products manufactured by a company with customer expectations and specifications that define what the product should be like. It is an extremely important element of overall production management, as it is crucial to the success of the company and its development prospects. It is measured in various ways – for example, the following can be used for this purpose:

  • Defect rate – the percentage of defective products in relation to the total number of products manufactured. The lower it is, the higher the quality of production,
  • Complaint rate – the percentage of complaints relative to the total number of products sold. As with the defect rate, the lower the value, the better,
  • Customer satisfaction survey – a method of collecting information from customers regarding their level of satisfaction with the products and services offered. In this case, a higher score obviously indicates higher production quality.

How to ensure high production quality?

Ensuring high-quality production or improving production quality is a process that takes time and requires a series of appropriate steps. This task can be made easier by following the pyramid model of quality management. This model places particular emphasis on examining each element of the production process, discouraging a focus solely on monitoring activities and measuring the final product. According to its assumptions, the first step should be to check whether the problem lies in the equipment used in the plant and the competence of the people operating it. If this is indeed the case, improving production quality will require investment in new equipment and training for employees. The next step is to look at the processes taking place within the company. This includes both work productivity and efficiency, as well as organizational and managerial issues. A systematic approach to managing all aspects of quality, which should include activities such as planning, monitoring, and quality control in the production plant, can help to improve them. It is also extremely important to comply with international quality standards and conduct regular audits to identify areas for improvement and ensure compliance with standards. The final stage should be the measurement of the product itself, i.e., confirmation that the physical product complies with the documentation and that it fulfills its function.

It is worth adding that the easiest way to improve production quality is to implement automated and/or robotic technological solutions. Their implementation, which is preceded by steps such as needs analysis, machine design and construction, will also help to ensure process repeatability and increase productivity and efficiency at the plant. Automation and robotization will also greatly facilitate the planning of activities and minimize errors, which directly translates into improved business operations and, consequently, increased profitability and reputation in the market. It is also worth mentioning that their implementation will enable, among other things, automatic quality control, which will streamline the entire product measurement process.

Challenges in ensuring high-quality production

When talking about ensuring high production quality, one cannot fail to mention the challenges involved. First of all, implementing quality management systems and investing in training or new technologies can be quite costly. Therefore, before implementing them, it is necessary to plan the activities well so that the entire undertaking does not exceed the financial capabilities of the company. Quality control itself is also sometimes a problem, as it requires advanced knowledge in the case of complex processes. It is also worth mentioning that maintaining a high level of production in an era of constantly changing market requirements and new legal standards is not an easy task. It is necessary to constantly monitor and analyze processes and introduce improvements, while keeping track of current trends. However, this does not change the fact that ensuring high production quality is the key to a company’s success, which brings real benefits in the long term.
