Warehouse automation

2024-08-14

Many people associate automation mainly with production plants that manufacture goods on a mass scale. In practice, however, it can be implemented in any company where repetitive processes dominate. This also applies to warehouses, where traditional, manual work models are increasingly being replaced by automated technologies. We explain what warehouse process automation is and what benefits its implementation brings.

What is warehouse automation?

Warehouse automation is nothing more than the implementation of autonomously operating machines that partially or completely replace human labor in performing repetitive tasks. Depending on the individual needs of the company, it can cover some or all of the processes taking place in the warehouse. It involves the implementation of various devices and technologies that coordinate and streamline the execution of tasks. The role of humans in automated warehouse spaces is limited to supervising and controlling the operation of machines, as well as performing more complex tasks or those that must be performed manually.

Automated warehouses are most often equipped with devices and machines such as autonomous mobile robots, warehouse lifts, automatic roller or belt conveyors, and automatic racks. Management is usually handled by a WMS (Warehouse Management System), which is special software used to track and coordinate operations performed on goods. The type of equipment and modern warehouse solutions that will be implemented, and the tasks that the machines will perform, depend on the individual needs of the company.

What warehouse processes can be automated?

Virtually all processes occurring in a warehouse can be automated, including:

  • Receiving and issuing goods from the warehouse – as part of the automation of this process, automatic systems for loading and unloading goods in vehicles, pallet size and weight control stations, verifying whether the delivered goods meet specific requirements, and sorters, automatically classifying and separating products according to their intended use, are being implemented,
  • Warehousing – modern warehousing solutions in this area include systems that streamline the process of storing goods, including pallet and container stacker cranes that automatically place/remove pallets or pick up and place loads from racks,
  • Transport – automation of warehouse processes of this type involves the implementation of, for example, AGV trucks, pallet and container conveyor lines, and autonomous mobile robots that transport goods between different areas of the warehouse without human intervention,
  • Order preparation – automating order picking can involve signaling devices that guide operators preparing goods or appropriately programmed industrial robots that completely replace humans in this process,
  • Logistics processes – warehouse automation systems are invaluable in planning and organizing work, controlling inventory and quality, and monitoring the flow of goods.

Why is it worth implementing automation in a warehouse?

There are many reasons why it is worth deciding to automate your warehouse. The most important advantages of automating storage processes include:

  • Increased efficiency – an automated warehouse can operate around the clock, allowing all processes to be carried out faster, which will have a positive impact on customer satisfaction with the company’s services,
  • Elimination of human error – properly programmed machines operate with high precision and repeatability, without tiring. This eliminates the risk of errors or damage to goods due to employee inattention or fatigue,
  • Cost optimization – the implementation of automated machines allows for the minimization of material losses, reduction of operating costs, and more accurate planning of activities, which, combined with the minimization of downtime, translates not only into a reduction in warehouse maintenance expenses, but also an increase in profits,
  • Increased employee safety – entrusting repetitive and physically demanding tasks to machines significantly reduces the number of accidents.
